Aging isn’t always easy to see. People watch as loved ones, family friends and people from the community age before his or her eyes. There is nothing one can do about time except make the most of what is given to them.
You’ve always told your parents you would repay them for all they have given you in life. This time has come now that they are older. There is no desire for a group home or retirement home. It’s made clear your parents want to stay at home. The home means everything to them–a showcase to a job well done. The sacrifices made to afford that home were remarkable, and it is understandable why they would want to stay.
Making it safe for an aging parent is the first goal of a quality caregiver. There are many ways to do this and plenty of tips to get you there. Independence is something everybody wants to feel when getting up there in age.
Analyze The Situation
Your parents have been living independently for several decades and then it all changes at once. They need caregiving, but how much? It’s important to truly understand this when attempting to keep aging parents at home. Independence is something every human being wants in life. The notion is especially true for aging parents, so it is important to meet them where they are at by addressing the situation.
Perhaps your parents are still quite mentally sharp. You are pleased when you realize cognitive function seems to be operating as it always has. Getting around physically may be more of a challenge. Manipulating environments in the home is important for promoting safety. Move throw rugs, promote non-slip mats in the bathroom and keep living quarters mostly on the first flow to help eliminate the likelihood of a fall. There are plenty of things one can do to make the home safer. Mobility plays a huge role.
Assist With Mobility
Sometimes mobility scooters can mean a neighborhood stroll just got a little smoother. Scooters like these make transportation easy. There are many reasons why a person may not get around well on foot. That doesn’t mean they should be limited strictly to the cramped conditions of their homes. Solutions are out there for those people who have achy joints, health conditions or simply can’t get around like they used to.
Scooters promote health. Falls can be devastating to a person of any age, but the risks increase as one ages. Using a scooter to get around at the grocery store is simply safer than having to risk getting knocked into. Imagine a crowded place like a fair without a scooter. Make sure to have plenty of chairs and places for the aging parents to rest within the home. Benches, counter stools in the kitchen and other devices to encourage safe mobility are encouraged.
Don’t Burn Yourself Out
If you find yourself in a situation where you are playing an extremely active role in caregiving roles with your parents, don’t hesitate to take a step back if need be. Life is stressful. There is much to say about all the demands, but one should never be ashamed of taking some time to themselves.
It’s easy to burn out and feel sluggish after a long day of work and caregiving duties. Don’t promise more assistance than you can offer. This way you can provide the best help during the time you are present.
Share The Responsibility
You may have siblings or have the ability to utilize another resource. Find a way to limit your involvement. It would be great if humans didn’t need to rest to recalibrate themselves to live a healthy life. The truth is that there’s not enough time in the day for you to spend as the primary and only caregiver. Share the load.
This should be straightforward but it can be overlooked: health. A person will want to make sure they provide the proper living situation in the home through helpful safety strategies. Having the bathroom, bedroom and every other part of the home set-up properly is important. One wants to be able to get around and not slip and fall. Make sure to promote health through activity and exercise. Other manipulations to consider around the home:
- Have Plenty of Light
- Grab Bars In Restroom
- Clear Walkways
