High School DxD exploded onto the anime scene in 2012, becoming one of the most successful anime series of the year – becoming so successful, in fact, that it was adapted into a handful of different series and spinoffs for the end of that year.
Four seasons of the “mainline” of High School DxD anime storylines have been produced already, and fans are desperate for information about everything that season five might have to offer. The show last aired in 2018 (beginning in April and ending in July), but news about the fifth season has been a little bit hard to come by.
Passion Studios has gone on record as stating that they would like season five to be unveiled pretty soon, and we have been digging around to figure out exactly when that might be – and what kind of surprises may be in store.
Let’s dig right in!
Season 5 Rumors
Previously, Passion Studio (the anime behind High School DxD) was pretty good about renewing this anime at least a year before the following series went on air – but this kind of broke down at the end of season four.
For one reason or another (nobody in the industry is really sure why) High School DxD season five wasn’t green lit before season four went on air, even though that was the expectation. The show was still getting fantastic viewership in Japan as well as in the United States and some in the industry believe it to be one of the most popular anime series on streaming platforms, too.
Well, the dam kind of broke in late 2018 when Passion Studio came out and officially announced that they were in fact going to be moving forward with a fifth season of this show.
That was the good news.
On the flip side, however, there was some bad news attached to this announcement that has some fans of High School DxD more than a little bit nervous about what the future of this show might be.
One of the biggest rumors circulating online about the season five High School DxD anime series is that the original production crew responsible for the storylines, bringing the manga to life on TV, and the actual animation aren’t all that interested in continuing to push forward with the High School DxD project.
This has left Passion Studio hunting for a new production team to turn the High School DxD project around, and that’s taken them a little bit longer than anticipated. This could definitely explain the huge delay between the fourth of season and the fifth season four sure, but so far Passion Studio remains pretty tightlipped about everything.
Interestingly enough, the first four seasons of High School DxD never really made it through all of the original manga source material. On top of that, the author of the original manga has continued to pump out new source material that could be converted into anime pretty easily – but we’re not sure if that’s the direction that the new team on season five is going to go in or if they’re going to try something else radically different altogether.
What We Know For Sure
That’s what we have on the rumor side of things when it comes to High School DxD season five, anyway.
As far as things that have been confirmed are concerned, fans will be excited to know that a fifth season is in fact in the works even if it isn’t expected to shown to the public until 2020 at the earliest. Passion Studio has put their ducks in a row to get this thing off the ground but they are still going to need a little bit of time to animate, get the voice actors all locked in, and move forward with the overall performances.
Another big confirmation from the studio is the fact that the entire English and Japanese voice acting team are going to be returning to their original roles. This is a huge deal, especially with the significant layoff between season four and season five. It isn’t at all uncommon for anime projects that are delayed for this long to have to recast main characters, just because the actors and actresses decide to move on to other projects because of the uncertainty.
At the end of the day, it looks like we are all going to have to wait a little while longer until we get to experience everything that is High School DxD season five. But it’s nice to know that it is officially in the works, will be here sooner rather than later, and will feature all of the main characters that people have fallen in love with already.
Ideally, High School DxD launches again in 2020 but it may not be until 2021 (probably the spring of 2020 or 2021) until we actually get to dive back into this anime world. Keep your fingers crossed!
