There are several reasons your air conditioning may not be cooling. While some of these you can fix yourself, others may require a professional.
You can determine whether air is flowing through the vents by holding a lighter or candle flame close to the vent. The flame should waver. Move further away from the vent and watch the flame. It should continue to waver all the way across the room. The effect will be most pronounced on rooms and vents closest to the air conditioning unit. If the flame doesn’t waver as you near the other side of the room, you may not have adequate airflow.
If this is a newly installed air conditioner, you might question whether it was properly installed. If it is not newly installed, and the performance has gone down, it may be the air filter or ducts are clogged, or the AC fan may be out.
The air filter needs to be changed periodically. Visually inspect the filter and if it is covered in dust and dirt, it is time to change it. Neglecting to change the filter when it is dirty can not only create difficulty keeping your home cool, but it can also lead to worse issues such as a frozen evaporator coil.

The condenser is the part of the unit that is located outside. It must be kept clean and have plenty of air space around it to work properly. Leaves, weeds, dirt or debris can block airflow around the condenser, causing it to fail. It is important to clean the condenser annually with a gentle spray from the hose.
If the condenser fan motor is broken the unit will not be able to dissipate heat at all, and a professional must be called.
The compressor is located outside with the condenser. It is responsible for circulating refrigerant throughout the system. If the compressor is bad, the AC won’t be able to work at all. You can suspect a bad compressor if the air coming from the compressor is not hot, especially if the unit is noisy.
A professional may be able to repair it, but if the unit is over 10 years old and out of warranty it may be wise to replace the entire condenser at this point.
Refrigerant is the liquid that absorbs heat from the air. If there is not enough, the AC won’t be able to absorb enough heat to cool the air. Signs of leaking refrigerant include ice on the refrigerant lines, a frozen evaporator coil, and bubbling, hissing or whistling noises from the refrigerant lines.
If you suspect leaking refrigerant, you should call a professional aircon servicing in Singapore immediately. Continuing to run it in this state can damage it badly.
Air is transported via ducts into the various rooms of a house. When there are leaks, cool air is lost.
Ducts can be inspected and sealed where needed by a professional.
Sometimes the solution to an electrical issue may be as simple as flipping off a breaker and then flipping it back on again. Other issues may include faulty connections, a blown start capacitor or run capacitor or a worn blower fan motor. A professional technician can help identify and address the issue.
Thermostat issues can arise from a buildup of dirt, dust, spider webs or grime which interfere with its proper functioning. Loose screws or loose or corroded wires can also be the culprit. It could be as simple as a dead battery in an electronic thermostat.
Confirm the thermostat is faulty by placing a room thermometer next to the thermostat. Wait for at least 15 minutes, and if the two are more than a degree in difference, you can suspect there is something wrong with the thermostat. A professional can safely replace the thermostat if needed.
If the air handler is frozen it will block the air from coming in contact with the refrigerant in the evaporator coils. This can sometimes be remedied by turning off the AC for 24 hours to allow it to completely defrost and dry. Dirty evaporator coils freeze more easily. You can attempt to clean them yourself by gently scrubbing the grime with a soft brush and a small amount of clean water, taking care not to bend or damage the coils.
If this doesn’t seem to work a professional technician can clean the unit thoroughly and safely.
